Painting Portraits with Adam Clague

Description

Join me in painting my first love—portraits! A good portrait is more than a painting. It’s a celebration of a person, and there is much to celebrate! Whether you’re painting a loved one or a total stranger, each individual has a unique personality and beauty. For these reasons, portrait painting is highly rewarding, but it is especially so because it also provides a great challenge!
Perhaps your past attempts at portraiture have not captured your subject’s likeness. Maybe your portraits have appeared flat and formless. Maybe you’ve found yourself stuck in the mire of “muddy” skin tone mixtures. I’m excited to show you how to conquer these difficulties and many more in this online course. You’ll learn how to:

  • Capture a good likeness of your subject
  • Nail accurate proportions every time, no matter the pose
  • Make your portraits come to life in 3-D form
  • Mix any skin color
  • Avoid “chalky,” “muddy,” lifeless skin tones
  • Use dramatic lighting to bring out form and likeness
  • Choose the perfect background
  • And much more!

Schedule

  • Each Wednesday, you’ll receive a video presenting an essential principle for portrait painting. These videos will be accompanied by Homework Challenges designed to strengthen your skill in that area.

  • Each Thursday, I’ll host a live Paint-Along Demonstration via Zoom. I’ll show you my process from start to finish as we paint a diverse variety of models. You can ask questions at any time. Can’t attend live? No problem! Every live event will be recorded for you to watch at your convenience.

  • Each following Wednesday, you can receive my feedback on your work during a live group Feedback Session.
I hope you’ll join me for this wonderful time of fun and learning!

Although portrait painting requires much practice, I will share the principles you need to capture the beauty of people realistically and dynamically. I will also provide exercises so you can continue to strengthen your skills even after the course has ended.

    Week-by-Week Overview

    Week 1: Lighting and Proportions.

Good lighting is essential for bringing out your model’s form and likeness. I will share several effective strategies for portrait lighting. I will also demonstrate how the 4 Actions for Accurate Proportions can enable you to nail an accurate drawing every time, no matter the model’s pose.

    Week 2: Form.

One of the greatest challenges for painters is making subjects look 3-dimensional and not flat. I’ll show you how to paint lights and darks so that your portraits come to life in 3-D form. You will also learn how edges can help your portraits appear lifelike enough to start speaking!

    Week 3: Temperature.

Do you struggle with color mixtures that look “chalky” or “muddy”? I will share keys for mixing flesh colors that are full of life. I will also explain how to harness temperature to capture light, shadow and form with greater realism.

    Week 4: Color.

Mixing the right colors for your portraits will become less intimidating with my simple method for mixing any skin color. I will help you analyze the colors in your subject with the 3 Questions for Correct Color. Then, I’ll demonstrate how to mix those colors with my 6 Guidelines for Mixing Color.
